The Feuerstein Method was originated by Prof. Reuven Feuerstein (1921-2014) who was a clinical, developmental and cognitive psychologist. After World War II, Feuerstein worked with North African immigrants in Israel and came to understand the complex learning needs of immigrants, refugees, and other disadvantaged groups.
Feuerstein strongly believed that all human beings can learn irrespective of age, ability, ethnicity and IQ scores. He was renowned for his groundbreaking theories of Structural Cognitive Modifiability and Mediated Learning Experience in demonstrating that intelligence is not fixed but modifiable. He thought that we need to teach the vitally important - and often overlooked - skill of learning how to learn.
Since the 1970s, Feuerstein created and developed numerous applications for his methodology: The Learning Propensity Assessment Device (LPAD) identifies an individual’s learning potential – how one learns best and how extensive one can learn; The Instrumental Enrichment (IE) cognitive intervention program teaches individuals the thinking skills that are necessary for effective and active learning.
